Steampunk Inspired Owl
Hello Creatives!
Today I am so excited to be sharing a new steampunk project that was recently featured on the Butterbee Scraps.
I have always LOVED the look of Steampunk but have never really seen it as my “style”, but after I was asked to join Butterbee’s Design Team I knew I had to give it a try with all of her amazing metals! (You can shop her amazing collection of embellishment here: Butterbee Scraps Artistic Treasures.
I started with this blank owl wooden plaque from Darice I found at Walmart for about $2.
I used Deco Art Dazzling Metallics in:
Peacock Pearl
Festive Green
Crystal Green
Rich Expresso (Not pictured)
I used the Peacock Pearl as my base coat and then dry-brushed the Festive Green over top:
Once those dried, I dry-brushed the Crystal Green on and dried it completely. Then I added a light coat of Rich Expresso over the whole thing and when it was mostly dry, I used a baby wipe to wipe some of it away.
Next came the fun part!! Playing with all those yummy metals! I did a dry run before deciding which should go where.
I don’t have a picture of it, but once I got his middle part done, I realized the rest of him needed some more texture, so I added some natural mesh to the face and the feet before adding the facial features and the side feathers.
Once I had them glued down (I just used a hot glue gun), it was time to start the painting! To get the colorful patina, I layered each of my Dazzling Metallics over the whole piece by using dabbing motion. Using a normal “painting” motion leaves too many lines. Dabbing adds more texture.
Allow the colors to stay wet while you are layering so that the colors blend better.
I kept adding layers until I was happy and once it was dry, I added 8mm beads to centers of my small flowers and clocks for the center of my eyes.
Here are some closeups of the finished product:
You can see in the closeups, I went back in with a watered down black acrylic paint around the edges to give my piece more shadows and add POP.
For a complete list of the Butterbee Scraps metals I used, check out the full blog post here: Butterbee Scraps Steampunk Inspired Owl.
I hope you enjoyed today’s project! I had so much fun making it.
XOXO,
KERI
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh – sooooooo INCREDIBLY LOVELY… Wow. The colors are gorgeous Keri and the placement of all the beautiful metals is just PERFECTION. I even imagine that right in the middle there is a tiny baby owl… kept safe….I see two eyes and the little body!! So that makes it even more special!! FABULOUS creation! j.
