Mixed Media with Butterbee Scraps

Hello Creatives!

Today I am so excited to share my newest mixed media piece for Butterbee Scraps!

My thoughts…

For this project, I wanted to do something completely different from my last piece for Butterbee Scraps (You can see my Steampunk Owl here.)

I wanted to go bright and funky and messy. I think I succeeded, don’t you? LOL

How Did I do it?

Step 1

I started with a piece of an old particle board bookcase. I have TONS of pieces of wood in my garage that I keep for  moments of inspiration like this!

I made sure to scuff up the surface with a fine grit sand paper so that the surface would not be as slick. Once that was done, I added  healthy coat of white gesso. This allows whatever I put on top of it to stand out, instead of the brown “wood” showing through.

Step 2

Next, using Liquitex Matte Gel Medium, I added a layer of 7Gypsies tissue paper. Make sure to dry your project completely before going on to the next step.

Step 3

Although I didn’t get a picture of it, once my matte gel medium was dried, I added a light layer of of gesso to brighten up my brown colored paper.

Next, I used my finger to add green to the bottom of my project and blue and purple to the top. {see the end of this post for a complete supply list-including colors!}

You want some of the bring from the tissue to peek through, so if you get too much paint on your project, use a baby wipe or damp paper towel to remove a little.

Step 4

Now it’s time to add texture and layers! I used a Crafter’s Workshop Stencil and Liquitex Modeling Paste, a stamp from Unity Stamp Company and ink from Heidi Swapp.

Step 5

Continue to add layers…like Washi tape and paint splatters and all sorts of fun! For the big rings, I actually stamped with a plastic cup using my Heidi Swapp Ink.

Step 6

Using my matte gel medium, I layered 3 kinds of black lace ribbon to be my stems. On one side I add some modeling paste to act as the “highlight” from the sun and to add more texture.

Step 7

To make my flowers, I used Butterbee Scraps Vintage Label Ribbon. I cut it into different shapes and made “fringe” for the small flower. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to make all sorts of unique flowers.

I added Butterbee Scraps Silver Flower Metal Filigree (161-P) and (168-P) to the center of my flowers,  Silver Butterfly (091-P) and Copper Square Filigree (068-C) which I cut apart and used as the leaves.

Step 8

To finish up my project:

(1) I added words from Illustrated Faith by Bella Blvd

(2) My flowers felt like they were blending into the background, so I used a little watered down DecoArt Media fluid acrylics in Black to add some shadows behind them.

(3) Using my Painter’s Fine tip paint pen in White, I added a few doodles and some lines around my flower petals.

I added navy blue and black around my petals and metal embellishments to make them POP even more.

Splattering paint and ink all over your canvas is a fun and easy way to introduce lots of color and making your project feel more cohesive.

You can see from this side view that (a) I didn’t neglect the sides! & (b) There are LOTS of yummy layers!
