Deco Art Media Antiquing Cream

Deco Art Media Fluid Acrylic

How to…

To start with, I used DecoArt Media Gesso to prep my wooden plaque from Darice.

I set this aside to dry while I worked on the next step.

When I decided to do this project, I knew I wanted a skull to be the creepy center, but I couldn’t find the size I needed with a  flat back.

This bag of little plastic skulls was only $4 at Walmart! (If you need any…I have plenty left! LOL) Walmart Plastic Skulls

They didn’t have flat backs like I needed, so I had to do a little surgery.

TIP: Use a sturdy pair of scissors like kitchen shears for this because in a few places the skull plastic is pretty thick.

After my background was dry, I did a dry run to get my layering the way I wanted.

TIP: When you are dealing with a lot of small pieces on a project, ALWAYS do a dry run so that you can move it around until you are happy. Take a picture for reference later so you don’t lose your inspiration.

Once I was happy, I removed my metals and went to town layering my DecoArt Acrylics and Metallic Lustres and DecoArt Media Antiquing Cream and Fluid Acrylics.

My goal was to achieve an aged wood effect…I think I got it!

Finishing Touches

Using my picture as reference, I began adding my metal pieces back on top and then layered more around my base layer and my skull until I was happy.

Here is a few more close-ups:

You might notice my skull is different. In my “prep” pic, you see a gessoed skull. I changed it because once I started working on it, I realized I like the natural skull better than anything I would have been able to paint.

I instead chose to cut another skull and use it as is.
